The project
The housing cooperative Wogeno realized the residential development "Avellana" in Schwamendingen on a narrow, long plot with a slight slope, consisting of a new building and a replacement building in place of a barn. The realized project emerged from a competition. A total of 17 new, extremely attractive residential units were created in the two buildings.
The construction
The new building is constructed in timber throughout from the floor slab onwards - with the exception of the curtain-type balconies in steel construction. The new replacement building for the barn had to be constructed again in the same volume for reasons of monument preservation. Thus, the first floor was realized in solid construction, the two upper floors in timber construction.
The challenge
Due to the difficult space situation and expensive soil conditions, the new building was adapted as optimally as possible to the plot boundaries. This resulted in the elongated structure of the new building, which meanders somewhat up the slope. This special geometry presented the project team with many challenges during the planning and execution phases.
