The project
The warehouse is built entirely of timber from the floor slab upwards. The almost 6 m high first floor is used as storage or commercial space, while the upper floor houses small apartments with shared maintenance zones and spacious roof terraces. The mezzanine and upper floors are accessed via a staircase with encapsulated cross-laminated timber panels. Generous skylights bring plenty of daylight into the corridors and residential units, which feature exposed wooden surfaces.
The construction method
The skeleton construction on the first floor with the almost 9 m wide storage units enables a very economical construction method thanks to the additional beam in the middle of the hall. In the canopy, the beam layer spans the entire width of the respective rental unit. Thanks to the large-format and visible cross-laminated timber panels, the construction time could be kept short.
The challenge
With the large spans (up to 16 m) of the suspended single-span beams, high loads have to be connected to the main beams. The connection was solved with a steel part specially made for the situation.
