Replacement Multi-family house, Zurich

The project
The apartment building has a basement with underground parking, technology and cellar rooms in reinforced concrete. Above this are 4 storeys in pure timber construction with a timber staircase and building reinforcement. The facade is designed with vertical timber cladding and fitted with aprons for fire protection.

The construction method
The walls are of frame construction with the exception of the bracing walls, which are made of cross-laminated timber. Cross laminated timber was used for the storey ceilings, which were covered with a fill for the line level and sound insulation. The staircase is constructed with encapsulated cross laminated timber.

The challenge
Finding suitable bracing was a challenge, as there are practically no continuous walls across all floors. This was solved with cross-laminated timber walls, which were braced with threaded rods.
