The project
The new Wier nursing home in Ebnat-Kappel is being built as a solid and timber structure. The rooms, the roof and all supports are made of wood. This wood comes from the surrounding communities. The public utility rooms of the upper floors and the cores are made of concrete.
Currently, the residents reside in a temporary building. Work is scheduled to be completed on the new building. The nursing home should be completed by 2023. It will provide a new home for 95 residents. Since the rooms are of wooden construction, they offer a pleasant atmosphere.
The construction method
The basement and first floor are planned in reinforced concrete, as is the building core. The residents' rooms and all supports in the building are made of wood. The special feature: In nursing homes, fire protection standards do not allow floor slabs in wood without sprinklers. For this reason, a sprinkler system is planned in the building. A pressure-impregnated wood façade is used for the facade.
The challenge
For the new building, the wood used comes from the surrounding communities. In order to ensure that the wood is available on time, the planning of the wood procurement from the forestry industry to the processing companies and the wood builder had to be well coordinated from the very beginning.
