The project
The addition to the existing office building at Lessingstrasse 3 in Zurich consists of two floors in timber construction. A total of 5 new apartments were created - 3 maisonettes as well as 2 storey apartments.
The construction
The cantilever of the second attic floor was solved with the load-bearing 120 mm cross laminated timber panels. The ceilings and the roof were formed with box girder elements over 7.20 m and connected to the load-bearing cross laminated timber panels with support battens. For bracing, the stairwell and a wall slab in solid construction were led up to the roof. The ceiling and roof slabs were connected to these.
The challenge
Due to the different floor plan arrangements, the loads from the timber construction could only be transferred to a few points. Another complicating factor was that the second floor of the extension projects 1.30 - 2.90 m beyond the first floor on one side. Here, the apartment partition walls were designed as load-bearing panels with 120 mm cross-laminated timber boards resting on two point supports.
