The first four-story column-and-panel structure made of wood is located in Frenkendorf in Basel-Land. Such a structure is only possible with TS3 technology. Now the apartments are occupied - a review of an exciting construction project.
The construction industry The construction industry is on the verge of a radical change. large buildings. TS3 makes large areas made of wood possible. This means that wood can replace traditional reinforced concrete in many projects - which is good for the climate. The technology is the result of more than ten years of research and development together with the Bern University of Applied Sciences and the ETH Zurich. With the four-story multi-family house in Frenkendorf, the proof of concept has been more than achieved.
TS3 technology is not only highly interesting from a technological from a technological point of view. It allows for flexible room concepts. Thanks to the load-bearing Thanks to the load-bearing support, the walls are not load-bearing and can be easily moved.
Thermal bridges made simple. Because of the low thermal conductivity of wood, there is no need for elaborate cantilever connections. The CLT ceiling simply runs from the apartment to the loggia.
The building was once planned as a solid Andreas Scherrer of schererarchitekten ag was able to convince the client to build a timber structure with TS3 technology. technology. During the convincing phase, he had to plan the building project in different material variants. There TS3 played into his hands. Because: Planning with the biaxial load-bearing cross laminated timber panels is similar to projects made of reinforced concrete. But the environment is happy: With the system change from concrete to wood, 536 tons of CO₂ could be saved at Fasanenhof. This is an important contribution to climate protection.
Simple application in construction
"For us, the TS joint is of little concern. We
can do our normal processes," explains Benjamin Kaiser, site manager of the
Stamm AG company. Thanks to the meticulous planning and prefabricated components,
we set up the building with 15 apartments in just three weeks. At
projects with a lot of steel, brick and concrete, it takes much longer. Often
planning and decisions are still being made on the construction site. That massively disrupts the construction process.
With timber buildings, it's different. Technologies such as TS3 and construction projects built almost
built almost entirely of wood are worth their weight in gold for us," says Kaiser.
The cross laminated timber panels were pretreated in the manufacturing plant and are easy to assemble.
A Stamm employee assembles the cross-laminated timber panels with dovetail connectors, then the TS3 casting resin is initiated.
From research project
to market readiness
The
Timber Structures 3.0 technology, or TS3 for short, is a process that can generate large
large areas from wood - without the cross beams that have been common up to now. These
large areas can replace reinforced concrete in most areas. TS3 connects
wooden components on the face side. For decades, this was considered impossible. The solution
is a two-component polyurethane casting resin. This resin joins the
wooden elements to each other on the face side. This enables
column-and-slab constructions that were previously only possible in reinforced
were possible. This means that timber construction has reached the third generation - a
quantum leap that is causing the construction industry to rethink.
